Outdoor Vs Indoor Photography: What to choose for your wedding

Isn’t it amazing how wedding photography has evolved? Nowadays, couples hold the power to choose how they want their photos to be taken/seen by the audience.

Whether to choose outdoor or indoor photography on your big day will be one of the toughest decisions to make. Not only does this play a major role in your wedding, but it makes every moment unique for you and your guests. As a Trivandrum-based photographer having more than 15 years of experience in this field, I would like to share my thoughts here. This article will help you choose between outdoor or indoor photography for your wedding

Although indoor photography is popular these days, both outdoor and indoor photography have their perks and differences. When it comes to choosing indoor vs. outdoor photography, I suggest considering certain aspects such as ease and convenience, your personality, preferences, theme of the wedding, budget, etc.

Outdoor vs. Indoor: Which One Do Couples Prefer?

Recently, we posted a poll on our Instagram account and half of the respondents preferred indoor photography. If you are considering the same but still confused, let’s do a dissection of both.

Ease and Convenience

Indoor locations are usually manually controlled environments. This, therefore, means that you will be spared from harsh weather conditions. Neither a hot blaze nor gusty winds can damage your precious pictures.

People who opt for an outdoor location are willing to take the risk of dealing with natural elements to get amazing pictures because natural light can do wonders for your pictures. While it might not be easy to arrange for electrical sockets and use the equipment that requires an electrical or WiFi connection, the struggle would be worth it.

Comfort and Privacy

Despite being a mandatory tradition, not every couple is comfortable with photoshoots. Most shy couples prefer privacy so that they can do better in their photos.

If you have rented a fine indoor space, it can provide privacy for your photoshoot.

Choosing an outdoor location, however, is not helpful in that regard. A public park or some other space that gets a lot of traffic will become an obstacle for the photo shoot, both for the couple and for the photographers.

On the other hand, choosing a secluded outdoor location can work in your favour, besides presenting an amazing background for your romantic photos.

Creative Freedom and Props

The number of spaces is very limited with indoor photoshoots. Plus, rental authorities can be very annoying at times reminding you of the time that is left for your shoot, which will in turn make you rush through the shoot. What’s more, indoor spaces only afford a few backgrounds on which you can work to have better pictures.

While it has some limitations and risks when taken outdoors, it compensates for the variety of scenic backgrounds. You can keep moving around and have many amazing photos that differ from each other and avoid appearing boring due to a single background. Plus, the probability of you paying by the hour to rent the space is unlikely; hence, it won’t be heavily expensive in your pocket.

Your Personality

If you are the kind of person who loves being outdoors and travelling, it is pretty easy for you to choose outdoor photography. That, however, doesn’t mean indoor photography isn’t for you. I had a couple who chose a “midsummer romance.” theme for their indoor wedding. Some cute ideas for decoration: floral arrangements, fairy lights, candles, greenery-related props.

If you like to see many trees and grass in your photos, then outdoor wedding photography would seem obvious. If too much green is not a good thing and you are keen on colours, your indoor wedding is going to be easier to achieve.

Lighting

If you like natural light, although some indoor venues have lots of natural light, then an outdoor venue would be a better option. Not all outdoor wedding locations offer the same level of natural light. The more they are covered by trees or walls, the faster they lose light. Seasons should be taken into account: winter days are shorter.

If artificial lights (such as bistro lights, chandeliers, uplighting, etc.) are part of your plan, then you’re much better off indoors, thanks to the ceiling. While you can hang some bistro lights outside, that’s about as far as you go.

Wrapping Up

Although there are more factors to consider, such as photographers, noise, travel, etc., in my view, the largest factor will be the weather. If you think that the weather in your area will be extremely hot, cold, or rainy, then indoors should be better because you don’t want to plan all outdoors just to go inside when the weather doesn’t cooperate. The thing is preparation. Understand their preferences and prepare accordingly.

I would suggest you plan ahead of time and tie up the venue at the earliest opportunity because if your wedding is within peak season, everyone who wants to get married during that period will potentially compete for your ideal venue.
