With over a decade of experience capturing the beauty of motherhood across Trivandrum, I have come to appreciate just how extraordinary this city is as a backdrop for maternity photography. From the golden shores of Kovalam to the timeless heritage walls of Padmanabhapuram, Trivandrum offers expecting mothers a range of settings that are as diverse as they are breathtaking. There is something almost poetic about this city, in the way the Arabian Sea crashes against ancient laterite cliffs, how temple corridors hold centuries of whispered stories, and how the early morning light falls through a canopy of old rain trees as if it were made for a photograph. I have shot in studios across Kerala, but nothing quite replaces the feeling of standing at a real location with an expecting mother and knowing that what you are about to create will last far longer than the nine months that led you there.
Kovalam Beach
Of all the beaches near Trivandrum, Kovalam is the one I return to most often for maternity shoots. Its three crescent-shaped bays, bordered by coconut palms and rocky headlands, give you natural framing that no studio set can replicate. The iconic red-and-white Vizhinjam Lighthouse rising above the treeline adds instant cinematic depth to any composition. The magic here happens at golden hour, roughly around 5:30 to 6:30 PM between October and February. At that time, the Arabian Sea turns amber and copper, the wet sand becomes a mirror, and silhouette photography comes alive. I often position the mother close to the shoreline, facing the horizon, with the lighthouse slightly out of focus in the background. The result is the kind of image that looks like a still frame from a film. The mood at Kovalam is warm, open, and dramatic, perfect for sweeping emotive portraits. Varkala Beach
About 54 kilometres north of Trivandrum, Varkala offers something genuinely unique along Kerala’s coast. It is the only place in southern Kerala where towering laterite cliffs rise directly alongside the Arabian Sea, creating an entirely different visual language compared to Kovalam’s open bay. From the cliff path, you get a bird’s-eye view of the ocean below, winding stairs leading down to Papanasham Beach, and a horizon that seems endless. The cliffs glow red-orange in the late afternoon, and that warm stone tone contrasts beautifully with ivory, burgundy, or sage green fabrics. The energy here is bohemian and candid, shaped by cafés, wind, and moving fabric. Some of my favourite frames come from mothers simply walking the cliff path, completely unposed. I recommend early morning for quiet sessions or late afternoon for golden light over deep blue seas.

Napier Museum and Gardens
When logistics or late-pregnancy tiredness makes long drives impractical, the Napier Museum complex in Thiruvananthapuram offers remarkable beauty within the city itself. Most people think of the museum in terms of its artefacts, but as a photographer, I see sprawling gardens with ancient trees and dappled light that creates a natural softbox effect. The Indo-Saracenic building designed by Robert Chisholm, with deep red gabled rooftops and Gothic elements, becomes a striking backdrop. The gardens also house the oldest living rubber tree in Kerala, and the shade beneath these trees gives diffused, flattering light ideal for maternity portraits. The wide paths make movement easy for expecting mothers, which is important during long sessions. I always prefer early morning shoots here when the light is soft and the heat has not yet set in, allowing for calm, comfortable pacing throughout the session.
Padmanabhapuram Palace
About 55 kilometres south of Trivandrum, near the Kanyakumari border, stands Padmanabhapuram Palace, one of the largest and best-preserved wooden palaces in India. The UNESCO tentative heritage site is from the 16th century, is over six acres in size, and has intricately carved wooden pillars, granite-floored corridors, and latticed windows that create extraordinary patterned shadows. This spot has a rare sense of gravitas for maternity photography. The architecture is a deeply self-sufficient Kerala aesthetic rooted in proportion and craft. The inside is dark and atmospheric, with light filtered through ancient timber screens, requiring the use of natural exposure to get the best results, but artistic and unique ones. The wooden corridors and courtyards are especially striking for composed portraits. Even the surrounding greenery outside the palace offers strong framing opportunities.
Kuthiramalika Palace
Closer to the city centre near Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Kuthiramalika Palace offers a more intimate heritage experience. Built in 1846 by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Balarama Varma, it is known for its 122 carved wooden horse brackets along the roofline, each uniquely detailed. The palace interiors feature carved ceilings, rosewood pillars, verandas, and courtyards that create a warm, textured visual environment. Unlike larger palaces, this space feels personal and meditative, shaped by the artistic spirit of its creator. For maternity photography, the verandas are ideal for close portraits, with sidelight entering through courtyards and enhancing natural skin tones. The combination of wood tones and soft daylight creates a timeless, organic palette. I often use the rhythm of pillars to add depth and structure to compositions while keeping the focus on expression and emotion.
Kuzhipallam Botanical Garden
The Kuzhipallam Botanical Garden near the city is one of those locations that instantly feels relaxed and unforced. The gardens create a natural shift in mood where expecting mothers often become more expressive and comfortable. Unlike heritage sites, where grandeur can sometimes feel formal, here the atmosphere encourages movement, laughter, and candid interaction. From a photographer’s perspective, the variety of environments within a small space is extremely useful. Open lawns work well for wide portraits, flowering beds are ideal for colour-rich close-ups, and shaded trees provide soft, diffused light. This flexibility allows for a complete maternity session without needing to change locations. Morning light works best, especially before 11 AM, when shadows are soft and balanced. Flowing fabrics in natural tones like cream, sage, or terracotta work beautifully against the greenery and enhance the organic feel of the images.
Poovar Island
About 35 kilometres south of Trivandrum, Poovar is one of the most cinematic maternity photography locations in Kerala. Here, the Neyyar River, backwaters, and Arabian Sea meet in a single frame, creating sandbanks, mangrove tunnels, and open water compositions that feel almost surreal. Most of the island is accessible only by boat, which adds a sense of journey and occasion. I usually shoot from a traditional wooden motorboat, allowing the landscape to unfold naturally around the subject. The sandbanks at the river-sea meeting point create powerful, wide compositions, especially during early morning when the water is still. Mangrove tunnels offer a more enclosed, intimate lighting environment that feels almost sacred. The combination of water, sky, and natural textures makes Poovar ideal for deeply emotional storytelling images.

The right location is the one that resonates with the person being photographed. Some expecting mothers feel most themselves by the sea. Others feel at home amongst carved wood and ancient stone. Some simply want open green and morning light.
